The June 11, 2023 Weekly Roundup of the Iowa Podcasters Collaborative
Climate, Ukraine, a Mike Pence "secret," and more...
Welcome to the June 11th weekly roundup of the Iowa Podcasters’ Collaborative. We are your hosts Robert Leonard, Amy Russell, and Sarah Davis.
This is Bob, and I’d like to apologize for being late with this post. I’m retiring from radio this week, and have been busy wrapping things up. I also spent a day and a half in Amana at a retreat for members of Julie Gammack’s Iowa Writers’ Collaborative and hope to bring a number of lessons I learned there to this newsletter.
Here are the current members of the Iowa Podcasters’ Collaborative and what they are up to this week:
First, Sarah has her delightful podcast up. Check out Warmly, Iowa, where Sarah shares stories about her love of Iowa. (Bob again--I love this!)
Podcast By George (PBG) continues to interview guests from around the globe about the "PBG Big Three" - Climate War and Healthcare. Watch as Jami Rae Wallace from East Palestine, Ohio describes a recent spate of seizures in her community. Click here to see that segment of the interview. Serge Tiagnyriadno was also on the PBG LiveLine. Serge is a musician holding-out in Kyiv, Ukraine - refusing to evacuate! Among the many topics shared with viewers was the staggering death toll of the war. Click to see that segment of the interview.
Iowa Revolution is hosted by award-winning radio broadcaster Spencer Dirks, and he and Robert Leonard (aka Bob, or Dr. Bob) discuss news, politics, sports, and much, much more. Episode 11: The Anti-Woke Farmer’s Market, Nikki Haley blames trans athletes for teen girl suicide, Mike Pence has had a lot of “work” done, and the top five Spencers and Bobs!
Listen to What the Hell Happened Iowa with Julie Gammack and Rekha Basu. Two Iowa journalists investigate what the hell happened to Iowa, a once progressive state that, as of 2023, has swung far right. Why? We'll be asking Iowans just that question.
Your window to the world of Iowa Politics is KHOI’s Capitol Week radio broadcast with Laura Belin, it airs each Monday at 7:00 PM, and the archives may be found at the link above. Laura Belin, the author of the blog Bleeding Heartland, updates us on developments in Iowa government, hosted by KHOI’s newsman Dennis Hart. All subscribers to Iowa politics with Laura Belin on Substack receive an audio file and recap of every edition of KHOI Radio’s “Capitol Week.” And please consider subscribing to Laura’s Substack newsletter, Iowa politics with Laura Belin.
Julie Gammack’s Iowa Potluck offers a weekly Monday Zoom call at noon, and since it is a video digital product, it’s a broader part of the Iowa Podcasters’ Collaborative. She will be posting a new episode soon. (Check out a recent written post for the time being.)
On her most recent installment, host Mary Swander provides background on the research and production of her new play Squatters on Red Earth, a peaceful encounter in the middle of the white settler land grab. Swander details her interactions with both the people of the Amana Colonies and the Meskwaki Settlement. These two groups, wanting nothing more than to remain hidden from the outside world, had a positive experience together in the early settlement days-all the while genocide whirled around them. Laura Hudson Kittrell sings Manifest Destiny. Rip Russell gives a short excerpt from the play. Brant Bollman, the director, speaks about the puppetry in the performance.
