The February 28, 2024 Roundup of the Iowa Podcasters' Collaborative
So, so much to listen to, watch, and learn from...
Welcome to the February 28 roundup of the Iowa Podcasters’ Collaborative. We are your hosts Robert Leonard and Amy Russell. We have some new people we would like to introduce you to below, and please hear what’s been happening with the Iowa Podcasters’ Collaborative with the links below:
Julie Gammack’s Iowa Potluck offers a weekly Monday Zoom call at noon, and since it is a video digital product, it’s a broader part of the Iowa Podcasters’ Collaborative. Listen to Save Byron's of Pomeroy ...featuring the purveyor of reheated frozen pizza and live music, “If ever there was an example of why local storytelling matters, it’s this one.”
On Podcast by George Assange - a Closer Look with Matt Hoh and Kelley Lane. Be sure to check out George several times during the week. He posts great new content faster than we can keep up!
“Sigh. Life can be hard. But sports continue to inspire…” Check out Rob Gray’s Area podcast with the recent program: Riffing on the spectacle that is state wrestling, ISU's title hopes and more. Iowa's a special place in myriad sporting ways.
Your window to the world of Iowa Politics is KHOI’s Capitol Week radio broadcast with Laura Belin, it airs each Monday at 7:00 PM, and the archives may be found at the link above. Laura Belin, the author of the blog Bleeding Heartland updates us on developments in Iowa government, hosted by KHOI’s newsman Dennis Hart.
All subscribers to Iowa politics with Laura Belin on Substack receive an audio file and recap of every edition of KHOI Radio’s “Capitol Week.” And please consider subscribing to Laura’s Substack newsletter, Iowa politics with Laura Belin - her most recent can be found here: Iowa Senate Republicans found a way to make blood donations a partisan issue.
Iowa Revolution is hosted by award-winning radio broadcaster Spencer Dirks, and he and Robert Leonard (aka Bob, or Dr. Bob) discuss news, politics, sports, and much, much more. Listen to Episode 40: The Kids Yearn for the Slaughter House. Trump vs. Biden Redux. Madea Learns AI. Also, kids graduate from Iowa colleges and then get the hell out, Ronna McDaniel we hardly knew ye, and top 5 worst athletes as people.
Beth Hoffman lives on a farm near Lovillia. Beth is a former public radio journalist and professor from California who now chronicles the farming life in rural Iowa in her substack In the Dirt. She is the author of Bet the Farm: the Dollars and Sense of Growing Food in America. Read here for How to (Not) Write a Midwestern Psalm.
Talking Paragraphs with Daniel P. Finney has joined the Collaborative. Check out episode: No. 151: RIP Fruit Stripe gum, Taco Bell cereal, and Pizza Hut goes to war.
AgArts with Mary Swander is always interesting Season #3: Episode #57: The podcast explores spirits, the kind you want to lift in the winter, and the kind you want to drink year-round. And the kind that comes back to haunt you. Host Mary Swander explores the history of two bootlegged whiskeys: poitín in Ireland, and Templeton Rye in Iowa, and her connection to both. Readings from Plain Interest. And John K. Corless singing Noreen Bawn.
Here are some other Iowa’s digital media creators we are also watching and/or listening to. Dave Price, formerly with WHO-TV, is now the editor of the American Farmland Owner. Just hearing the words “bird flu” can send chills down a farmland owner’s back like a January morning in Grand Forks. But this month they heard a welcome word: “vaccine.” When will it be developed? And, how will it be administered? Details at the link:
And don’t forget the legendary John Busbee at the Culture Buzz. Always something new!
